Get big results from Business Intelligence 8 Tips

Get big results from Business Intelligence 8 tips:

Traditional Business Intelligence projects have developed a reputation for becoming increasingly complex, costly and time-consuming, they overrun or fail, and some requirements can be impossible to realise.

we believe that it is possible to achieve startlingly good results using relatively small focused teams

We believe that it does not need to be like this.  Indeed, we believe that it is possible to achieve startlingly good results using relatively small focused teams.  How do we perform this alchemy?  Here are our 8 tips:

  1. Method and architecture
You need to select an appropriate method and stick to it.  If you are trying to deliver an agile Data Warehouse, we think there is only one method Data Vault 2.0. because it was designed specifically to address the challenges of Business Intelligence and Data Warehouse projects.
  2. Results orientation
It sounds obvious but focus on the areas that will deliver business benefits quickly so that the business can see tangible results from what can seem to be an abstract discussion about data.  Agile is designed to deliver benefits frequently to the business and should be used as the development approach.
  3. Use hybrids
Do not be paralysed by your existing IT infrastructure.  Whilst inflexible legacy infrastructure is a fact of life.  The Data Vault 2.0 approach allows you to build new functionality alongside the existing Data Warehouse giving you time to gradually decommission legacy systems.
  4. Attitude
Agile Data Warehouse architectures and methods can seem counter-intuitive.  If developers are locked into traditional ways of working, they need to be open minded because some ideas may go against some of their existing beliefs.
  5. Automation
Today there are tools designed specifically to help with Data Warehousing projects.  They can improve efficiency by enabling automation, reducing the team size, ensuring consistency and dramatically improve productivity.  With automation, if you make mistakes it is very easy to go back and correct them by re-creating what you have already built.
  6. Experience
Experience helps to avoid mistakes.  You are going to make decisions early in the project that will have longer term consequences, so it pays to understand what these are and to get them right.  If you do not have experience in-house, be ready to bring the right skills whether consultancy, coaches or delivery partners.
  7. Cloud
Cloud based tools enable you to scale-up very quickly and cost effectively.  As you learn more about what is needed you can adapt to the new set of requirements.  At the other end, when you have finished with resources, cloud allows you to decommission resources immediately without paying for them in the long term.  Furthermore, there is a range of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning functionality preconfigured that you can deploy without having to set them up.
  8. Governance
The effectiveness of your Data Warehouse is dependent greatly on the quality of source data so parallel activities to improve governance, data management and data quality will help set the Data Warehouse up for success and will deliver additional business benefits.
If you do not have experience in-house, be ready to bring the right skills whether consultancy, coaches or delivery partners

Remember delivering successful Business Intelligence and Data Warehouse modernisation does not have to be complex, expensive and high risk.  Our experience shows that using small teams of specialists can deliver much better, faster outcomes for your business.
